In theory... I agree. However, in practice, a targeted market campaign still has the hopes and designs to go "viral" either by word of mouth or by digital means. Word-of-mouth is at its truest form a viral marketing campaign.

During a release weekend word of mouth or viral sentiment of the film is what spreads the good or bad early reviews. Just because a term is being over used does not mean it should be a portion of your overall marketing strategy.

OMG thank you, thank you. Down with the term "viral marketing campaign." It is like saying you are making a cult film. Only your audience can make it cult.

BEFORE you make a film, know who your audience (target, and it isn't everyone!) is, how to reach them, and start gathering them all during the process.
